A red letter refurbishment

It’s one of the most iconic structures in Melbourne, and a building that has seen a lot of history – and a lot of change.

The famous ‘Redhead’ factory, originally constructed in 1909 for use in manufacturing safety matches by Bryant and May, has added some classic Edwardian glamour to Cremorne’s busy Church Street for generations.

Current owners Red Energy needed to provide best in activity-based-working facilities for their marketing and call centre teams, numbering 1200 people. Our brief, in partnership with Carr Design Group and Shape Australia, was to transform three levels of this famous red brick landmark into a facility that would serve the largely agile Red Energy teams.

In total 1170 custom widened Lockin H3 lockers and 9 generous coat cupboards were installed. The lockers featured USB charging ports for each team member and the Gantner RFID locking system throughout. Drawers beneath each locker afforded extra storage as well as housing services.

A hallmark of the project was the degree of customisation required. A prototype locker was made prior to the fitout to ensure it would integrate seamlessly within the new building form. Lockers were designed such that sufficient ventilation was allowed above each locker bank.

A striking meld of old and new design, Red Energy’s Melbourne office is both beautiful and highly functional – the home for an active, thriving workplace that also prizes its famous heritage. We’re proud to have been part of this ground-breaking refurbishment.
